BAPTISM

BAPTISM – JESUS AND US

Matthew 3:13-17; Romans 6:1-10

INTRO: We want today to see how Jesus' baptism serves as a model for us. What is the significance of baptism for us? How does it relate us to Jesus?

JOHN'S BAPTISM

It was a baptism of repentance.

John demanded to see a change.

Baptism was a symbol of that change.

JESUS' BAPTISM

   He identified with sinful mankind.

It was a forgleam of His death.

It was an act of obedience to God.

OUR BAPTISM

   We identify with Jesus.

It is a symbol of a change in our life.

It too is a forgleam of resurrection.

It is an act of obedience for the church and for the believer.

NOTE THE PROPER ORDER

   Salvation. Trusting Jesus as Savior.

This will bring a change. (repentance)

Then baptism – symbolic of identify with Jesus.

Always by immersion in the Bible.

Being in/with Jesus brings victory in life.

TODAY, do you need to trust Jesus as Savior? Do you need to follow Him in believer's baptism?

CONTENTMENT

GODLY CONTENTMENT

Psalm 37:1-11

INTRO:  "Contentment!" That is something that we all desire but many do not attain. Philippians 4: 11 is a NT illustration where Paul says "…I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances."  In this Psalm there are some positives and some negatives in relation to contentment.

POSITIVES:

TRUST in the Lord (vs. 3)

   Depend on Him.

DELIGHT yourself in the Lord (vs. 4)

And He will give you the desires of your heart.

COMMIT your way to the Lord (vs. 5)

Trust Him and He will do it.

REST in the Lord (vs. 7 KJV)

   Wait patiently for Him.

NEGATIVES

DO NOT FRET because of evil doers. (vs. 1, 7, and 8)

DO NOT ENVY the wrong doers. (vs. 1)

CEASE FROM ANGER (vs. 8)

Verse 5 is the summary verse. It calls for:

A commitment. Roll your cares upon the Lord.

            Faith. Trust God

            Acceptance. He will do it.

IT ALSO CALLS FOR A DECISION:

For believers: Trust God for all needs.

Trust His leadership and depend on Him.

For those without Christ:

            Trust in Jesus as savior.

            Commit your life to Him.

            Accept His gift of salvation.

BACK TO THE BIBLE

BACK TO THE BIBLE

2 Chronicles 34: 14-33

INTRO: Josiah was a boy king at age 8.

8th yr (age 16) He began to seek God. (vs. 3)

12th yr (age 20) He purged the idols. (vs. 3)

18th yr (age 28) He began to repair the temple. (vs. 8)

In cleaning out the temple, the Book of the Law was found. (vs. 14) Found? Why was it lost?

Can the word of God (Bible) be lost today?

Sure:   When we don't read it.

When we read it but don't obey.

When we read it and refuse to believe.

               When we change its meaning.

Like the people of Israel in Josiah's time, we sometimes need to find the Bible. When we do and respond to it, several things will happen:

RETURN TO THE WORD

   Read, Listen, And Obey.

CONVICTION (vs. 19-21)

CONFESSION (vs. 27)

FORGIVENESS (vs. 28)

COMMITMENT (vs. 31)

    Josiah renewed the covenant.

CLEANSING

   Changing under God:

            His leadership.

            His power.

            His cleansing (I John 1:9)

DO YOU NEED TO REDISCOVER THE BIBLE TODAY? DO YOU NEED TO ASK GOD TO SPEAK TO YOU IN A NEW AND DIFFERENT WAY?
