JESUS DIED FOR ME!

THE SIN BEARING SERVANT

Isaiah 52:13 - 53:12

INTRO: As I was thinking about my Easter preaching, the question came: What does the world see as the reason for Easter? Why did Jesus have to die? I was reminded of this passage. So today I want to look at the Suffering Servant who died to cover the sins of the world.

SUFFERING THROUGH OBEDIENCE (52:13)

He will act "wisely". He will do so willingly. (John 10:17-18

He will be raised, lifted up, highly exalted.

This may refer to the cross or to His return back to Heaven.

SUFFERING THROUGH REJECTION (53:3)

He was despised and rejected by men,

A man of sorrows -- Not simple resignation.

SUFFERING OF PAIN (53:4-6)

Smitten (afflicted) by God

Pierced for our transgressions

Crushed for our iniquities

By his wounds we are healed.

"God laid on Him the iniquity of us all"

SUFFERING IN SILENCE (53:7-9)

Oppressed and stricken, but did not open his mouth.

He was with the wicked and the rich in his death.

SUFFERING FOR REDEMPTION (53:10-12)

It was the Lord's will to make his life a guilt offering.

After the suffering of his soul, he will see the light of life.

He bore the sin of many and made intercession for sinners.

VERSE 6 is the key verse of this passage. It explains the reason for the cross. All have sinned. God laid on Him all our sins. That's the reason for the cross and the reason for celebration. HAVE YOU ACCEPTED HIS REDEMPTION? HIS FORGIVENESS??
